Ward Clerk – Full Time (40 hours / week)

 

The Ward Clerk is responsible for performing the clerical duties of a nursing unit; acting as the receptionist for the unit during an assigned shift; and for the organization of supplies and environment of the nursing station.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience:  Knowledge of medical terminology preferred; computer experience preferred.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

• Answers phone and refer calls to proper person  

• Answers intercom and refers calls to proper person.

• Greets visitors, patients and staff.

• Provides necessary assistance to visitors, patients, and staff.

• Ensures coverage of nurse’s station during shift.

• Maintains consistently good telephone etiquette.

• Operates computer for order entry, running reports and label making.

• Transcribes physician’s orders.

• Maintains current patient chart.

• Records information to chart.

• Requisitions interdepartmental services.

• Maintains current census report.

• Files laboratory and x-ray reports.

• Ensures transportation of requisitions and specimens.

• Processes transfers and discharges.

• Audits charts for all documentation sheets. Prints off any missing portions and places in chart.

• Completes charges according to computer policy.

• Places all end of shift printouts in correct chart.

• Utilizes universal precautions in all aspects of work practice.

• Communicates positive culture reports to nurse in a timely manner.

• Remains compliant with hospital Hand Hygiene Policy.

• Maintains knowledge of hospital acquired infection rate and the measures being taken to decrease incident rate.

• Cleans equipment appropriately.

• Assists in maintaining cleanliness, order, and an attractive environment at all times.

• Keeps unit bulletin board current.

• Maintains quiet environment.

 

Non-Essential Functions

•          Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

•          Adhere to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.

•          Complete annual education requirements.

•          Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

•          Report to work on time and as scheduled.

•          Wear identification while on duty.

•          Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.

•          Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.

•          Comply with all organizational policies and standards regarding ethical business         practices.

•          Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

•          Attend regular staff meetings and in-services as needed.

 

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

•  May need to sit for up to 2-6 hours at a time

Have near normal hearing – able to hear alarms/telephone/normal speaking voice/ webinars

* Have near normal vision – clarity of vision (both near and far) either corrected on non-corrected, ability to distinguish colors

* Have good manual dexterity and eye-hand-foot coordination

* Standing – continuously within the shift (67-100%)

* Walking – continuously within the shift (67-100%)

* Climbing – occasionally within the shift (1-33%)

* Bending/stooping – frequently within the shift (34-66%)

*Twist at the waist – occasionally with the shift (1-33%)

*Pushing/pulling – frequently within the shift (34-66%)

* Lift/carry – 20lbs with assistance – occasionally within the shift (1-33%)

* Reaching above the shoulders – frequently within the shift (34-67%)

* Lift/carry – 50lbs with assistance – occasionally within the shift (1-33%).
