Education:

Completion of a Medical Laboratory Technician Program through an accredited vocational/technical institution.

 

Licensure / Certification:

ASCP, AMT preferred or eligible for certification.

 

Provides care for patients of the following age groups:

 

 Neonate (Newborn)                             Adult (19 to 59 Years)

 Pediatric (>Newborn to 11 Years)        Senior Adult (60 to 74 Years)

 Adolescent (12 to 18 Years)                 Geriatric (75 and Above)

                                                                                               

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen collection according to the Phlebotomy S.O.P.
  • Uses available resources independently.
  • Always remains courteous and considerate of patient needs.
  • Solves and documents problems.
  • Assures accuracy in specimen identification; utilizes at least two patient identifiers prior to specimen collection.
  • Distributes specimens to correct locale.
  • Adheres to criteria to ensure patient safety.
  • Ensures clear verbal communication of all critical and stat test results (repeated and verified).
  • Performs order entry procedures in CPSI.
  • Interfaces equipment with the computer for resulting.
  • Checks for accuracy prior to reporting results.
  • Prints various reports for QC and QA.
  • Reports lab results in a clear and professional manner.
  • Uses appropriate telephone etiquette.
  • Performs all blood bank procedures per S.O.P. (type, RH, antibody screen, cross-match, cord bloods, etc.).
  • Performs quality control and routine maintenance as scheduled.
  • Inventories and rotates stock blood supply.
  • Processes blood upon arrival to lab from the Supplier.
  • Utilizes the Hollister system.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform therapeutic phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrates ability to give instructions for autologous and directed donations.
  • Signs out blood and blood components appropriately.
  • Performs testing on all chemistry per S.O.P.
  • Possesses general knowledge and use of all chemistry analyzers.
  • Maintains and QC’s all equipment per level of expertise.
  • Investigates all aberrant errors and results.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs equipment per level of expertise.
  • Communicates well with the Section Leader and Hot-Line repair services.
  • Helps to maintain proper stock inventory.
  • Handles all referral lab work appropriately (processing, shipping, and reporting).
  • Performs testing in hematology and coagulation per S.O.P. (CBC, retics, platelets, manual counts, coagulation).
  • Performs abnormal cell counts.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of the operation of all equipment.
  • Documents and performs quality control and maintenance as scheduled.
  • Ensures stock rotation and appropriate inventory.
  • Investigates aberrant errors and results caused by lipemia, hemolysis, clotting, cold agglutinins, etc.
  • Communicates well with the Section Leader and Hot-Line repair services.
  • Performs testing in urinalysis per S.O.P.
  • Performs and documents all quality control, calibrations and all maintenance as scheduled.
  • Verifies all results for accuracy.
  • Troubleshoots all equipment per level of expertise.
  • Rotates and inventories stock appropriately.
  • Communicates well with the Section Leader.
  • Performs testing in Serology per S.O.P.
  • Performs and documents all quality control, calibrations, and all maintenance as scheduled.
  • Verifies all results for accuracy.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory.
  • Communicates well with Section Leader.
  • Performs testing and processing per microbiology S.O.P. (specimen plating, gram stains, media selection, etc.)
  • Verifies results for accuracy.
  • Knows rejection of specimen criteria.
  • Maintains accurate QC documentation.
  • Performs wet preps, India Ink and pinworm analyses.
  • Performs all micro serological testing (RSV, quick strep and meningitis panel).
  • Demonstrates proper care and use of the microscope.
  • Uses Cyto-spin for body fluids.
  • Cleans, organizes and stocks work area.
  • Unpacks supplies.
  • Maintains documentation of housekeeping per OSHA standards.

Neonate (Newborn)

  • Utilizes heel warmers to stimulate blood flow.
  • Uses appropriate technique and supplies for venipuncture.
  • Comprehends normal vs. abnormal lab values.
  • Comprehends the volume of blood requirements based on weight of neonate.

Pediatric (>Newborn to 11 Years)

  • Uses appropriate technique for venipuncture and finger sticks.
  • Appropriately uses restraining techniques.
  • Communicates instructions per age level of patients.
  • Comprehends normal vs. abnormal lab values.
  • Comprehends the volume of blood requirements based on weight of infant.

Adolescent (12 to 18 Years)

  • Communicates instructions and information to the patient.
  • Utilizes appropriate venipuncture technique.
  • Comprehends normal vs. abnormal lab values for the particular age group.

Adult (19 to 59 Years)

  • Ability to communicate instructions and information to the patient (regarding testing, collections, etc.)
  • Utilizes appropriate venipuncture techniques.

Senior Adult (60 to 74 Years)

  • Ability to communicate instructions and information to the patient (regarding testing, collections, etc.)
  • Utilizes appropriate venipuncture techniques.
  • Ensures bed rails are secure prior to leaving the patient’s bed side.
  • Comprehends normal vs. abnormal lab values per age group.

Geriatric (75 Years and Older)

  • Ability to communicate instructions and information to the patient (regarding testing, collections, etc.).
  • Utilizes restraints (if needed).
  • Utilizes appropriate venipuncture and fingerstick techniques.
  • Checks skin integrity.
  • Ensures the bed rails are secure to prevent falls.
  • Comprehends normal vs. abnormal lab values.
