Job Description, Duties, and Requirements

The Central Sterile Reprocessing (CSR) Technician is trained to decontaminate, clean, prepare, sterilize and dispense instruments, supplies and equipment.  The CSR Technician is also responsible for receiving, storing and issuance of supplies and equipment, maintaining records, assisting with inventories and maintaining sterile supplies throughout the hospital.

Duties

  • Operates washer/decontam machine.
  • Operates ultra-sonic cleaner.
  • Wears proper attire while working in decontam area.
  • Maintains closed containers of cleaning solution on area for dirty instruments.
  • Transports contaminated instruments to decontam from areas per policy.
  • Receives contaminated instruments from the operating room.
  • Checks all instruments for cleanliness.
  • Makes sure all instruments and equipment are working properly.
  • Assembles trays in neat, orderly manner and all instrument and supplies correct.
  • Packages instruments and trays in appropriate container, pouch or wrappers.
  • Reports any broken or damaged instrument.
  • Labels containers, pouches, etc. correctly.
  • Operates steam sterilizer correctly and observes safety precautions.
  • Loads sterilizer according to procedure.
  • Cleans autoclave monthly.
  • Operates sterrad sterilizer correctly observing safety precautions.
  • Loads baskets according to procedure.
  • STEAM
    • Completes load card.
    • Runs bowie-dick test card daily.
    • Runs biological indicator daily with a control once a week or when new box of indicators opened.
    • Maintains accurate and complete records.
    • Reports any failed test controls
  • STERRAD
    • Completes load card.
    • Runs biological and control indicator per policy.
    • Maintains accurate and complete records.
    • Reports any failed biologicals
  • Stores sterile supplies in an orderly manner.
  • Rotates supplies.
  • Checks sterility dates of sterile supplies.
  • Reprocesses outdated supplies according to procedure.
  • Replenishes crash carts per procedure.
  • Maintains par levels of supplies on units serviced by CSR.
  • Orders supplies weekly from materials department.
  • Completes patient charges using computer system
  • Stores equipment in an orderly manner on units and CSR.
  • Reports any malfunctioning equipment immediately and pulls out of service until cleared by biomed.
  • Makes sure water levels are filled on appropriate machines.
  • Maintains equipment and supplies in a readied condition for dispensing to units.
  • Consistently knows where equipment is located.
  • Places orders for rotating mattresses.
  • Calls Company when equipment or mattress needs returning.
  • Keeps area clean and tidy.
  • Follows cleaning schedule.
  • Utilizes universal precautions in all aspects of work practice.
  • Complies with isolation procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of multi-drug resistant organisms and measures to be initiated.
  • Reports staff deficits related to compliance with Infection Control practice (i.e. noncompliance with hand washing, isolation procedures, maximum barrier precautions.)
  • Maintains knowledge of hospital acquired infection rate and the measures being taken to decrease incident rate.
  • Cleans equipment appropriately between patient and/or staff use.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions

  • May need to sit or stand for 2-6 hours at a time
