John Simms, PAC, Occupational Medicine

John Simms served his country during the Vietnam Conflict as a US Navy Corpsman. Although that was many years ago, the experience sparked an intense interest in medicine. For thirty years now, John has made his career in medicine - from rural clinic practice to teaching biology to college students - the road to Occupational Medicine has been peppered with many interesting turns.

His academic preparation includes completion of the Physicians’ Assistant certification program in Springfield, Missouri and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Georgia Institute of Technology. But just as valuable is John’s immense and prestigious work experience.

Responsible in part for OSHA compliance, John worked for General Motors performing physical assessments and various testing in the workplace for the automaker giant. He also was one of the PA’s responsible for the medical exams of physician researchers at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. “We had a saying at the CDC that describes what we did. “We take care of the people who take care of the people of the world”. Actually our jobs were caring for physician researchers who had a lab accident in the course of their work or a travel illness after returning to the US. These doctors were working with some of the worlds most deadly agents like Ebola and HIV,” says John.

John’s expertise is available to you at Stephens County Hospital. Beginning Monday, March 13th, John will be performing DOT Medical Exams, urine drug screen collection and breath alcohol testing. “John’s experience makes him the perfect addition to the program Stephens County Hospital is offering local employers. He is well trained, has a broad base of experience and is extremely personable,” says Hospital Administrator Ed Gambrell.
