FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE BEDSIDE

Graduate Nurses begin hospital orientation

TOCCOA, GA – For the next few months, “new grads” will participate in a nursing preceptorship program designed to orient them to the policies and procedures of Stephens County Hospital. “Nursing scholarship recipients as well as nursing students are typically employed during the summer of their junior year and we begin training them in the hospital. By the time they graduate their respective nursing programs, they are ready to become full-time employees.” says Faye Taylor, Director of Nurses. “In this group, eight of the ten new graduates were scholarship recipients. Upon graduation, each student is paired with a seasoned nurse who serves as a mentor or “preceptor” and will work alongside them during their regular shift. This program allows the new graduate to develop confidence in their abilities and assessment skills. The training sessions occur in the classroom, in the various patient care areas and ultimately at the patient’s bedside.”

The new nurses are students of the nursing programs from Piedmont College in Demorest, Breanu College in Gainesville and North Georgia College in Dahlonega. "We’ve had the opportunity to see these nurses in action and feel they are prepared to rise to the intense challenge of the nursing profession and do an exceptional job.” says Hospital Administrator Ed Gambrell. “They have also had an opportunity to see the internal workings of Stephens County Hospital and understand the expectations and rewards that accompany employment here. We congratulate each of them on their accomplishments.”
